Cultural Zone, Zhan Jiang, Guangdong, China
Creating a new cultural zone on a former naval dockyard. Four towers rising up from a wave form
roof over a shopping mall like crashing waves and the sails of boats. A theatre complex with 3 auditorium's, and international cruise terminal and a layered hotel almost 1.5km in length.
The original concept drawings were drawn up over a 5 day period, with the main architectural design being carried out over a further 18 days. The project forms part of regeneration plan for the former naval dock yards, and is seen as a new cultural zone for the City of Zhan Jiang. The City itself also forms a gateway for the sea crossings to a number of off shore islands.
It was important to create iconic buildings that set the pace for the whole city regeneration, while providing an international association with the new cruise terminal and marina. The 5 star hotel along the waterfront caters for the cruise passengers, conferencing an theatre guests. With a high end duty free shopping mall, it is linked to the main square and commercial office towers, shopping and leisure mall via a series of canals.
The main central complex also included a number of sports facilities including ice rink and indoor ski slope. The development itself was unusual in that it proposed to provide large scale infrastructure improvements along side a number of residential and commercial development areas adjacent the main regeneration site. Also close by is a Student Olympic Games village which continues the sport and cultural theme.
