mbo architects worked closely with the client to search for & assess several potential sites in the North Yorkshire area upon which to develop or build a new three bedroom home. This site, near Malton, was chosen due to what we believed was it’s superb potential. It had a very modest rundown detached bungalow set in a small clearing within an unmanaged overgrown woodland areas on a small plateau towards the peak of a slope with beautiful views out over the southern downs.
MBO worked with the Planning Authority to secure planning approval for a substantially larger property than the existing dwelling, nearly four times its size, within an area of high landscape value for a very ‘visible’ property. Thoughtful massing and siting, purposefully planned around natural clearings enabled the property to nestle amongst the mature trees and avoided the felling of any major trees.
By ‘sliding’ the house southwards down the slope unlocked the potential for the site enabling a large proportion of the pool house to be partially buried concealing ancillary accommodation with minimal excavations so that the larger property had next to no apparent impact on the surrounding landscape.
This also created a south facing terrace from the main lounge giving views out over the downs over the top of smaller trees at a lower level which both masked the lower areas and also provided privacy and shelter form the prevailing winds for the lower pool terrace.
Traditional materials and careful detailing further minimised apparent scale to harmonise the development within its natural landscape.
