Captains Wharf, Haikou, Retirement Community.
Captains Wharf Retirement Community was the first full scale retirement community to be built in South China. Coverings a land area of 66 ha, the development provides various types of retirement property investment and living, from retirement apartments to island villas.
Support facilities include a number of integrated communal facilities known as chambers, a hotel, spa, swimming pools, shopping mall and artisan workshops/galleries.
Water elements and a central lake were introduced to the scheme as a way of not only improving the irrigation but in creating focal points and a sense of well being in this large and arid landscape. The scheme itself was broken into communities or groups to aid phasing of the development but more importantly to create smaller social groups between neighbours and thus create harmony and a sense of belonging to the residents of what is otherwise an extremely large and dense development, not really aligned with retirement, peace and tranquillity. The smaller communal groups addresses the scale a and massing as did the varying architectural types and styles.
